Shanghai City Information

Also known as "Hu" or "Shen", Shanghai is the largest city in China and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.  It occupies a total area of 6,341 square kilometres (523 of which is occupied by Pudong New Area), with a total resident population of 16,000,000.  Shanghai has a pleasant climate, with four distinct seasons.  The average temperature is around 18 degrees C, and the annual precipitation is 1.2 millimetres.

 

An illustrious historical and cultural city set on the coast, Shanghai is a gateway to the Yangtze River delta. It is a municipality under the direct jurisdiction of the Central Government, China’s largest economic and trade centre, a comprehensive industrial base and the leading port in the country.

 

In recent years, the urban landscape of Shanghai has been greatly shaped by the construction of numerous modern buildings including Oriental Pearl Television Tower, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Jin Mao Tower and Shanghai Science & Technology Museum.  These modern buildings have now become part of Shanghai’s cultural landscape.  Colourful festivities, such as the Shanghai Tourism Festival and the Shanghai China International Art Festival, have attracted an increasing number of tourists from all over the world.

 

Shanghai is also a paradise for gourmets, with over 1,000 restaurants serving the 16 different styles of food in China, including those from Beijing, Sichuan, Guangdong, Yangzhou and Fujian.  Shanghai is also home to many Western restaurants, serving French, Russian, Italian, English, German, Japanese and Indian food, as well as Muslim and vegetarian food.  In Shanghai, one can taste all the delicacies of the world.
